British women prefer chocolate to sex: poll

LONDON (AFP) - More than half of British women prefer chocolate to sex, saying it can be depended on to give pleasure, according to a survey published Tuesday.

But British men overwhelmingly think sex is sweeter, with 87 percent preferring carnal pleasures to a bar of confectionery.

Fifty-two percent of women would rather curl up with a bar of chocolate, according to the survey of 1,500 Britons by confectionery giant Cadbury, quoting one women as saying "chocolate provides guaranteed pleasure".

"Chocolate never disappoints," she said.

Cadbury -- hit by a salmonella scare last year -- highlighted a study by the psychologists at the University of Wales into links between chocolate and endorphins, the mood-enhancing chemicals which produce feelings of pleasure.

"It's not just the endorphins that makes chocolate so enjoyable," said Paul Hebblethwaite, the company's global science director.

"As it melts in the mouth at body temperature, chocolate's creamy texture and unique aroma hit all of the body's senses, heightening the sensuality of the experience," he added.

Tastes vary between different parts of the country: Londoners are the keenest on sex, with 79 percent preferring it to chocolate, while overall 40 percent of people in eastern England would prefer to a bar of chocolate.

The manufacturer also pointed out that almost half of British men regularly give chocolate as a birthday present or a thank you gift.

London’s Harrods hires cobra to guard $120,000 shoes

LONDON (AFP) - To their high society owners, a pair of haute couture shoes can be a precious thing.

But to guard a 62,000 pound (120,000 dollar) pair of ruby- sapphire- and diamond-encrusted Rene Caovilla sandals at their London launch, retailer Harrods went to extreme lengths: bringing in a live Egyptian cobra to patrol the shoe counter.

Whether hiring a poisonous snake is, strictly speaking, the most effective means of guarding precious footwear might be a moot point with security experts.

But it makes for a pretty effective photo opportunity.

A spokeswoman for Harrods admitted that the cobra had been hired strictly for Monday’s launch of the shoe collection.

"The snake has now been returned to its owner," she said.

So no need to fear snake bites at the shoe counter, then.

"Not unless you’re a burglar," the spokeswoman said.

One snake for two people in Indian village

CHOTO PASHLA, India (AFP) - For some people, a poisonous snake hissing in their courtyard is the stuff of nightmares. But in this sleepy village in eastern India, the reptiles are welcome and abundant.

The village of Choto Pashla in West Bengal state has one snake for every two residents, mainly the poisonous monocled cobra, a black reptile with a yellow ring around its neck that can grow to seven feet (two metres) in length.

Such snakes are found everywhere -- in rice fields, ditches, muddy ponds and even sometimes sunning themselves by houses -- and no one appears to fear them.

"The poison-fanged reptiles represent a way of life in Choto Pashla. People of the neighbouring villages are scared to come here," said Samir Chatterjee, the local school headmaster, who has written a book about the snakes.

"A recent count by the villagers found there are more than 3,000 snakes in this village of 6,000 people."

The Geological Survey of India is studying the village to figure out why the cobras are flourishing there, an official said.

"We wonder why a particular species of snakes is thriving in this village," said the official, asking not to be named. "We are looking into the topography of the village."

Local lore has it that the reptiles first came to the little rice-farming village 130 kilometres (80 miles) northwest of the state capital Kolkata en masse six centuries ago during a flood.

The Hindu village began worshipping the snakes as the representatives of a goddess and believe that their farms have consequently prospered ever since.

"Women offer milk to the reptiles at midday when the priest worships the goddess of snakes, Manasa, in the temple," said Chatterjee.

When a snake dies, the villagers place it in an earthen jar and then immerses it in the sacred Ganges River.

Still, apart from feeding them and performing their last rites, the villagers do try to keep the snakes at arm's length, or more.

"Our customs forbid us from touching the snakes," said 25-year-old Dipu Majhi who was bitten by a snake nearly five years ago while fishing in a pond.

Nearly a dozen villagers die of snake-bite every year, locals say, with the village still relying on traditional treatments.

"I was asked to bathe in the pond beside the temple of the goddess of snakes and then a pinch of mud from the temple compound was rubbed on the injury," said Majhi, a fish and vegetable seller.

"My hand swelled but healed after a week."

Anti-venom drugs are available at some hospitals in the state, but these may not be near enough for the villagers to get to in time.

"It's a unique village where poisonous cobras are co-existing with human beings," said Dipak Mitra, a herpetologist. Mitra also runs a snake park in Kolkata with 700 species of the reptiles, and has visited the village.

"It's simply incredible," he said.

The cost of bringing up kids - the school years- AOL Parenting

When babies arrive there are the usual parcels of clothes and toys from friends and family who are glad to offload what their own offspring have grown out of.

Parents could be forgiven for thinking that this child-rearing lark is something of a breeze and not too damaging on the family finances. But be warned, this feeling won't last. Babies and toddlers are afforded many privileges for instance they travel free on airplanes, trains and buses. Most holiday packages will waive the costs for a child under two or three.

But once they are out of diapers and running around those privileges start to dry up. From the time of pre-school nursery to the time they leave for college, university or work, kids cost! And if you don't plan your finances properly you can forget that new set of golf clubs or that Arsenal season ticket.

When your child is three they are likely to be attending the nursery school. No longer free to all any more, nursery education costs on average £20-£32 for a full day - booking for a week means the daily rate typically comes down but you are still looking at an average cost of around £135 per week. With around 40 weeks of the year classed as 'term time' you are looking at a cost of £5,670 per year.


Of course not every child will go to nursery every day but parents who remain in full-time employment will consider a combination of nursery schools and child minders to take care of their children during the working week.


The cost of child minders varies as they are self-employed and set their own rates. You might expect to pay between £105 and £165 per week for a full-time place with a childminder.


Childminders are the cheaper option, you can expect to pay between £205 and £400 per week net for a nanny, although several nanny agencies in central London report weekly wages of around £650.

Helping Hand

Paying for all this is never easy and takes some careful planning but there is some help at hand in the form of childcare vouchers. Parents agree to sacrifice part of their salary for childcare vouchers, for an overall financial gain due to tax and NI savings. Parents can nominate the amount to be sacrificed, and can take a maximum of £55 worth of childcare vouchers per week.

We have already looked at the costs of very young children but what about those of school age. Well the bad news is that there is no respite for parents until kids leave home.

A report by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation found the national average for raising a child to the age of 17 was £50,000 but a more recent report called The Parent Trap, conducted by London Magazine suggested the cost could me much higher if London prices as well as private education and childcare were included in the equation.

From ages 5-11 parents can expect to pay in the region of £44,000 on private day school fees; £6,000 on uniform, including sports kit; and £18,000 on clothes, food, toys and general expenses. This is a grand total of £68,000.

From ages 11-18 private day school could be in the region of £50,000; uniform including sports kit: £7,000 and clothes, food, toys and general expenses costing a sobering £31,500, with pocket money of £2,500 on top of that so a total of £91,000. So the entire total cost of a child from the beginning to the end of their school days could be in the region of a wallet-stretching £159,000!

There is no magic formula to deal with the costs of parenting aside from sending your loved ones down the mine or up the chimney but we have compiled a check list to make life a bit easier.

1) Ensure all child benefits, vouchers, tax credits are claimed in the early years.

2) Start a savings account when your child/children are born. Over an 18 year period this may help to alleviate the costs associated with college/university or deposit on a house, first car etc.

3) A term or life insurance policy or income protection plan could provide some reassurance that the costs of bringing up you children can be met in the event of your or your spouse's ill-health or death.

4) Spend money sensibly - try to ignore pester-power, the pleading of children for the most expensive brands. Consider buying online or even e-bay where prices are more competitive. Avoid expensive HP loans or catalogue purchases that spread but increase costs.


5) Teaching your kids the value of money and even encouraging them to take on part-time weekend jobs may help more than you think. It may also help children to understand the basics of savings.

Two cars are at the lights, one a Ferrari Maranello and the other a Golf GTI - which will get away first?

If you said the Ferrari you might be surprised to learn that you could be wrong in the near future, because Volkswagen have unveiled an outrageous 200mph version of the Golf.

The Volkswagen Golf GTI W12 concept can hit 62mph in an impressive 3.7 seconds thanks to its awesome 640bhp engine.

Don't rush to your nearest dealer yet though, as the car is yet to be put into production, in spite of rave reviews from car shows across Europe.

Lower and wider than a stock GTI (which incidentally has around 450bhp less power), the standard car's doors, hood and lights are retained, but aside from these it's all new.


The GTI W12-650 is powered by a bi-turbo W12 engine, and the entire body is made of lightweight reinforced plastic.

Instead of the sort of enormous spoiler so beloved of boy racers, this GTI features a cutting edge diffuser design that uses the carbon-fibre roof to funnel air under a tiny spoiler at its trailing edge.

This, VW reckon, generates enough down force to allow the lucky driver to tame the 12-cylinder behemoth with a six-speed Tiptronic gearbox.

Although VW is tight-lipped about official pricing, and even likely production dates, industry insiders reckon this Ferrari-killer could hit the road for around £70,000. The current fastest Golf on the market is the R32, which sells for around £25,000.

The first Golf GTI was the original hot hatch back in the 1980s, and although recent models have been accused of getting fatter and slower, this latest one looks set to buck the trend and take back the hot hatch crown with a vengance.

The percentage of Americans who consider children "very important" to a successful marriage has dropped sharply since 1990, and more now cite the sharing of household chores as pivotal, according to a sweeping new survey.

The Pew Research Center survey on marriage and parenting found that children had fallen to eighth out of nine on a list of factors that people associate with successful marriages — well behind "sharing household chores," "good housing," "adequate income," a "happy sexual relationship" and "faithfulness."

In a 1990 World Values Survey, children ranked third in importance among the same items, with 65 percent saying children were very important to a good marriage. Just 41 percent said so in the new Pew survey.

Chore-sharing was cited as very important by 62 percent of respondents, up from 47 percent in 1990.

The survey also found that, by a margin of nearly 3-to-1, Americans say the main purpose of marriage is the "mutual happiness and fulfillment" of adults rather than the "bearing and raising of children."

The survey's findings buttress concerns expressed by numerous scholars and family-policy experts, among them Barbara Dafoe Whitehead of Rutgers University's National Marriage Project.

"The popular culture is increasingly oriented to fulfilling the X-rated fantasies and desires of adults," she wrote in a recent report. "Child-rearing values — sacrifice, stability, dependability, maturity — seem stale and musty by comparison."

Virginia Rutter, a sociology professor at Framingham (Mass.) State College and board member of the Council on Contemporary Families, said the shifting views may be linked in part to America's relative lack of family-friendly workplace policies such as paid leave and subsidized child care.

"If we value families ... we need to change the circumstances they live in," she said, citing the challenges faced by young, two-earner couples as they ponder having children.

The Pew survey was conducted by telephone from mid-February through mid-March among a random, nationwide sample of 2,020 adults. Its margin of error is 3 percentage points.

Among the scores of questions in the survey, many touched on America's high rate of out-of-wedlock births and of cohabitation outside of marriage. The survey noted that 37 percent of U.S. births in 2005 were to unmarried women, up from 5 percent in 1960, and found that nearly half of all adults in their 30s and 40s had lived with a partner outside of marriage.

According to the survey, 71 percent of Americans say the growth in births to unwed mothers is a "big problem." About the same proportion — 69 percent — said a child needs both a mother and a father to grow up happily.

Breaking down the responses, the survey found some predictable patterns — Republicans and older people were more likely to give conservative answers that Democrats and younger adults. But the patterns in regard to race and ethnicity were more complex.

For example, census statistics show that blacks and Hispanic are more likely than whites to bear children out of wedlock. Yet according to the survey, these minority groups are more inclined than whites to place a high value on the importance of children to a successful marriage.

The survey found that more than 80 percent of white adults have been married, compared with about 70 percent of Hispanics and 54 percent of blacks. Yet blacks were more likely than whites and Hispanics to say that premarital sex is always or almost always morally wrong.

Among those who have ever been married, blacks (38 percent) and whites (34 percent) were more likely than Hispanics (23 percent) to have been divorced.

Delving into one of the nation's most divisive social issues, the survey found that 57 percent of public opposes allowing gays and lesbians to marry. However, opinion was almost evenly divided on support for civil unions that would give same-sex couples many of the same rights as married couples.

Asked about the trend of more same-sex couples raising children, 50 percent said this is bad for society, 11 percent said it is good, and 34 percent said it made little difference.

Trump plans to build in Waikiki

One of the biggest names in real estate and reality television, Donald J. Trump, plans to put his mark on Waikiki as a development partner for a luxury condominium tower of Outrigger Enterprises.

 

'The Donald' • Established real-estate parent company The Trump Organization in 1974 • Claims to have the most recognizable international brand identity for real estate • Most active in New York, but currently developing projects in Las Vegas, Chicago, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Miami, the Caribbean, Canada and South Korea

The billionaire businessman plans to erect a signature building that could define a new level of luxury for high-rise living in Hawai'i where home prices have soared to staggering levels over the past year.

The ever-innovative New York developer has arranged to buy land at the makai end of Saratoga Road from Outrigger and to build the proposed 350-foot tower with Beverly Hills, Calif.-based investment and development firm Irongate Capital Partners, according to people familiar with the deal.

The tower is expected to cost around $200 million, have 300 to 400 residential units and be branded with the Trump Tower name or something similar reflecting the cachet of the real estate mogul and star of NBC's hit show "The Apprentice."

Outrigger has yet to finalize a contract for the project, so the tentative deal could fall apart. If final terms can be reached, completion of the transaction is expected in July.

Mel Kaneshige, Outrigger senior vice president, declined to say if Trump is involved in the high-rise project.

Outrigger, which conceived the tower as part of its $460 million Waikiki Beach Walk redevelopment of several old hotels mainly along Lewers Street, said earlier this week that it was negotiating with a shortlist of developers and expected to make a decision in about 30 days.

Kaneshige would not say if a tentative selection had been made. "We narrowed the field," he said, adding that the company's policy is not to announce deals until they are firm.

Trump was not available for comment yesterday, but his assistant, Norma Foerderer, said she was not aware of such a deal with Outrigger.

Two people familiar with Outrigger's effort to find a developer for its high-rise confirmed Trump's role, but asked not to be identified to preserve good business relationships with involved parties.

If Trump and Irongate complete their deal with Outrigger, it could bring a new level of luxury to high-rise living in Hawai'i.

Trump is known for pushing the limit on opulence, setting a record last year for New York condo sale prices at about $3,000 a square foot with a $13 million penthouse deal at Trump Park Avenue.

"I think he will bring some flare and excitement to the market," said Mary Worrall, owner of the local upscale residential real-estate brokerage firm Mary Worrall Associates. "He has such a following. I think it's very exciting."

A Trump tower would be the first big real-estate project in Hawai'i for the New York deal maker who persuaded the state to host the 1998 Miss Universe Pageant. The state and businesses contributed more than $5.3 million in money and services to Trump and the pageant organizers in return for repeated mentions and photographs of Hawai'i in the telecast.

Trump has developed a handful of luxury residential projects from the 90-story Trump World Tower, billed as the tallest residential tower in the world, to the $5 billion commercial-residential Trump Place under development with an initial planned phase of 5,700 residential units.

In January, Trump announced plans for a $220 million "ultra-luxury" condo in Tampa, Fla.

"We are developing a signature landmark property so spectacular that it will redefine both Tampa's skyline and the market's expectations of luxurious condominium living," he said in a statement.

Unit prices at Trump Tower Tampa with hotel-like services, spa and fine art range from $700,000 to more than $5.5 million.

Hawai'i's housing boom over the past couple of years has demonstrated strong demand for such residences as Hokua, the nearly sold-out high-rise overlooking Ala Moana Beach Park where prices initially ranged from $550,000 to $5.5 million.

Outrigger cited the run-up in home prices and sales volume in helping to convince the company to develop its new tower as a residential condo instead of the originally envisioned hotel.

Worrall said Hokua, which is still under construction, reset the bar for luxury high-rise condos in the market, and that a Trump tower could build on that.

"He's got his name on so many buildings in New York, and they all seem to be so successful," she said.

Trump in recent years has increasingly expanded outside New York.

Trump partner Irongate entered the Hawai'i market a year ago with a purchase of three acres in Waikiki's Hobron Lane area from Outrigger. Irongate sought approvals to build an upscale condo high-rise expected to break ground in June.

Outrigger has said construction of the envisioned Beach Walk tower — which will replace the Ohana Royal Islander hotel, Ohana Reef Lanai hotel and Hale Pua Nui apartments — could start in the first half of next year.
